Having only recently returned from our Annual General Meetings at Nottingham University, Jubilee Campus, I just wanted to mention how really good the meetings were – really positive, hopeful and very encouraging. Myself and my friend and colleague Val, came back to our congregation feeling very enthused.

It was Val’s first time – I’m an ‘old hand’, having been Chapel delegate often. The meetings change venue every year – last year was at Keele University.

Of course there’s business done at the annual meetings, which is very important, as the various departments need to report to the delegates that they are alive and well and that there’s lots going on and there is, but there’s so much else to do as well.

We had lively debates about topical and universal issues like assisted dying, the responsibility of all of us to promote peace between one another, our communities and the wider world and the whole question of the right way forward when considering the problem of drugs and how best to legislate to handle this subject properly.

Also, we had a wonderful evening of entertainment, during which we had contributions ranging from a stand up commedienne, Nessum Dorma on electric guitar, a set of James Bond theme tunes sung and an Elton John medley amongst other things.

Add to that, meetings of the Unitarian Women’s Group, the Youth Panel, the Psychical Society, the Women’s League, the Historical Society and the Peace Fellowship to name a few; our Anniversary Service, a choir and lots of social chat in the bar, as well as at meal times and over coffee and it all added up to a wonderful conference, with lots to bring home to our congregations to discuss and reflect upon. Our young people even produce five editions of a newspaper called the GA Zette, over the course of the conference, which contains reports on some meetings, adverts for others, quotes, jokes, overheards, tributes – in fact almost anything at all to delight and inform and entertain. this is sponsored by the FOY Society, (Fellowship of Youth).

It’s all very stimulating and exciting and I would urge anyone to attend at least once if possible, so that you get a complete flavour of everything that goes on at HQ and in other congregations and fellowships around great Britain and indeed around the world. There were quite a few Americans and a Rumanian Bishop there this year!

If I had my child to raise all over again -
I’d finger paint more and point the finger less;
I’d do less correcting and more connecting;
I’d take my eyes off the watch and watch with my eyes;
I would care to know less and know more to care;
I’d take more kikes and fly more kites;
I’d stop playing serious and seriously play;
I’d run through more fields and gaze at more stars;
I’d do more hugging and less tugging;
I’d be firm less often and affirm much more;
I’d build self-esteem first and the house later;
I’d teach less about the love of power,
and more about the power of love.

Recently the media has been covering with some interest something called the ‘Sunday Assembly’ – which is described by its organisers as “a godless congregation that meets to hear great talks, sing songs, and generally celebrate life.”
A first-time attender said: “It’s got all the good things about church without the terrible dogma”.
The one formula of words they do use is the encouragement to “live better, help often, and wonder more.” Would we have any problem with that?

Indeed the Editor of the Inquirer, Colleen Burns, had this letter published in the Guardian:-

The ‘Church without believers’ (Report, 4 February) looks like an excellent effort to create community around spiritual ideas. it’s very like what goes on in Unitarian churches every Sunday.
Many Unitarians are atheists, and we are each on our own individual path – which may or may not involve belief in God.
Anyone intrigued by the Assembly in London may want to consider searching out their local Unitarian community.

Are we ready for the influx, folks?!

The President elect of the Unitarian General Assembly, Bill Darlison, led a terrific service of celebration and renewal here yesterday, and part of what he offered was this morning affirmation:-

A reaffirmation of my belief that my life is a gift not a burden;

A recommitment to the principle of human brotherhood and sisterhood;

A determination not to take more than my fair share of the world’s goods and resources;

A resolution not to be overwhelmed by the enormity of the task

A determination to bear in mind these words of the American poet Miller Williams: Have compassion for everyone you meet, even if they don’t want it. What appears as bad manners, an ill temper or cynicism is always a sign of things no ears have heard, no eyes have seen. You do not know what wars are going on down there where the spirit meets the bone.

Each Seeking Faith – Brian Wren
No. 30 in the Unitarian hymn-book: ‘Sing Your Faith’

Each seeking faith is seeking light, and light dawns on our seeking
When clashing tongues combine to pray that light will shine,
And guide and gather all on earth in peaceful greeting.

Each seeking faith is seeking truth, for truth is lived by seeking;
And though our faiths conflict, no dogma can restrict
The power of truth set free on earth in honest meeting.

Each loving faith is seeking peace, and peace is made by seeking
To spin the strands of trust in patterns free and just,
Till every family on earth is in safe keeping.

Each living faith is seeking life, and life flows through our seeking
To treasure, feel, and show the heart of what we know:
In every faith the Light, the Life, is shining, speaking.

‘Be gentle with one another’ –

It is a cry from the lives of people battered by thoughtless words and brutal deeds;
It comes from the lips of those who speak them,
And the lives of those who do them.

Who of us can look inside another and know what is there
Of hope and hurt, of promise and pain?
Who can know from what far places each has come
Or to what far places each may hope to go?

Our lives are like fragile eggs.
They crack and the substance escapes.
Handle with care!
Handle with exceedingly tender care;
For there are human beings within –
Human beings as vulnerable as you are,
Who feel as you feel,
Who hurt as you hurt.

Life is too transient to be cruel with one another;
It is too short for thoughtlessness,
Too brief for hurting.
Life is long enough for caring,
Lasting enough for sharing,
Precious enough for love.

Be gentle with one another.

Sharing Sunday and welcome back to Chapel. We were delighted to be back in our lovingly restored Chapel, and showed our appreciation to Stephanie for her tireless contribution throughout the process. The theme of the service was our Chapel Family, which was appropriate as we welcomed Eila back, said goodbye to Andreas and settled back into the building where we hope all people can feel at home and part of the family. There was a retro feel as we played “how green you are”, hang-man, and Rose’s game where we moved our bodies to represent food; Helen’s swiss roll impression was memorable, literally rolling in the aisles! The highlight for me was the Mars Bar game. Four groups played, each person aiming to roll a six, put on hat, scarf and gloves and attempting to cut into a gift-wrapped mars bar using a flimsy, plastic knife and fork before another team mate rolled a 6 and took over. The sound of laughter from children to elders and everyone in between was a joy. “As we stumble through the stresses and strains of Christmas help us to hold on to our humour and release the joy of silliness”.
